Buying a Home to Age in Place

Buying Options

There are so many great options for housing that can be purchased. Owning a home is a great option. Experts recommend that housing for seniors be single story with solid surface flooring. There are other options to consider as well. If you are considering purchasing a home to age in place, you will want to determine if you want to live in a traditional neighborhood with a mix of residents of all ages, or a neighborhood that is restricted and caters to residents over 55. Another recent trend in housing is multi-generational housing. This is a home within a home, allowing families to take care of their parents. These homes typically have a private suite on the main level with a bedroom, living space, and kitchenette.

There is currently not a characteristic in our North Texas MLS system to enter or search by this type of home.  In recent years, many builders have started including this type of home in their line up of floor plans. Check out these builders to find this option:

  • Lennar calls this type of home Next Gen and is currently building these homes in several Collin County communities like Anna, Frisco, and Prosper.
  • DR Horton calls this type of housing HomeSuiteHome and is building them in some communities in Fort Worth.
  • Plantation Homes has a few offerings of their GenFlex homes as well.
